I Fixed My Game With This Simple Rule

I structure my play around controlled decision zones, using clear thresholds to decide how I move and attack.

First, I assess defensive pressure within the first 1–2 seconds of receiving the ball. If I have less than one arm’s length of space (tight pressure), I immediately reduce my dribble height and operate at about 60–70% speed. I use no more than 1–2 dribbles to stabilize—protect the ball, square my body, and avoid turnovers. My objective here is control, not attack.

If I have moderate space (about 1–2 steps of separation), I shift into setup mode. I use 2–3 controlled dribbles to test the defender—typically a hesitation followed by a lateral move. I watch for imbalance: if the defender’s weight shifts or their feet cross, I prepare to attack within the next move.

When I identify a clear advantage (2+ steps of space, defender off-balance, or open lane), I commit instantly. I accelerate to 90–100% speed and limit my action to a maximum of 2 moves—such as a crossover into a drive or a direct first step. I avoid chaining unnecessary moves once the advantage is created. Execution must happen within 1 second of recognizing the opening.

I also manage how I extend sequences. If no advantage appears after 3–4 dribbles, I reset the play—pass, reposition, or re-initiate. I avoid over-dribbling beyond 5 seconds in one possession to prevent defensive recovery.

To stay unpredictable, I vary tempo deliberately:

  • Slow phase: 50–60% speed for control and reading
  • Neutral phase: 70–80% speed for setup
  • Attack phase: 90–100% speed for execution

I never stay in one phase longer than 2–3 seconds. This constant shift prevents defenders from timing my movements.

My goal is to stay within a balanced decision window:

  • Under 2 seconds → stabilize or act
  • 2–4 seconds → create advantage
  • Over 4 seconds → reset

By following these steps, I maintain efficiency, reduce wasted motion, and ensure that every move has a clear purpose—either to stabilize, create, or finish the play.
